The real numbers

Teachable's Starter plan has no monthly fee and no credit card required to start. What it has is a 7.5% transaction fee on every sale, on top of Stripe's 2.9% plus $0.30 processing that runs underneath. On a $50 course sale that is $3.75 in platform fees plus $1.75 in processing, totaling $5.50. An effective rate of 11%. The monthly cost is zero, but the per-sale cost is real and compounds with every enrollment.

The Basic plan at $39/month eliminates the transaction fee entirely. The Builder plan at $69/month also has no transaction fee and adds features like graded quizzes, course completion certificates, and custom user roles. The math crossover for Basic: at approximately $520/month in Teachable revenue, Basic saves you more in transaction fees than the $39 plan cost. For Builder: at approximately $920/month, Builder saves you more than the $69 cost. Below these thresholds, stay on Starter. Above them, upgrade immediately.

If a student buys your $197 course and then asks for a refund, you get the $14.78 transaction fee back. Gumroad keeps its platform fee on refunds. This policy difference matters if your course category has a meaningful refund rate, because every refund on Gumroad costs you the sale plus the fee, while on Teachable you only lose the sale itself.

The effective rate on Teachable Starter varies with your average course price because of the $0.30 flat processing fee. On a $29 mini-course: 7.5% Teachable ($2.18) plus 2.9% Stripe ($0.84) plus $0.30 flat = $3.32 total. Effective rate: 11.4%. On a $497 signature course: $37.28 Teachable plus $14.71 Stripe plus $0.30 = $52.29 total. Effective rate: 10.5%. The flat fee matters less at higher price points, but the combined percentage is the dominant cost.

For creators running cohort-based courses or coaching programs with higher price points, the Starter plan's 7.5% fee becomes a significant line item quickly. A single $2,000 coaching package on Starter generates $150 in Teachable fees plus $58.30 in processing. Total: $208.30 in fees on one sale. The Builder plan at $69/month eliminates $150 of that. Two coaching sales per month at that price point and Builder has already more than paid for itself.

Teachable's reporting shows gross revenue and enrollment numbers clearly, but does not surface your effective fee rate or compare it against what you would pay on a different plan tier.
