Three income types, three sets of fees

Most working artists don't have one income stream, they have three or four, each with its own economics. Print sales through a marketplace like Etsy carry a listing fee, a transaction fee, and processing, stacked on every sale. Commissions taken through Ko-fi or a direct payment link carry a flat platform percentage plus processing, if any platform fee applies at all. Tips and ongoing supporter income might run through a completely different tool again. None of these three speak the same financial language, which is exactly why "how much did I make this month" is harder to answer than it should be.

Etsy's fee stack in particular surprises a lot of artists who assume the listing fee is the whole story. It isn't: a $0.20 listing fee per unit sold, a 6.5% transaction fee on the full order, and 3% plus $0.25 payment processing all apply before anything else. On a $25 print, that's roughly $2.83 in fees at an 11.3% effective rate, and it climbs further if the shop has crossed $10,000 in trailing sales and Offsite Ads becomes mandatory on ad-attributed orders.

Worked example

A $25 print on Etsy nets $22.18 (11.3% fee). A $25 commission deposit through Ko-fi's shop tier nets $22.73 (9.1% fee: 5% platform plus processing). Same $25, two different platforms, two different take-home amounts, and no shared dashboard showing both at once unless you build one yourself.

None of this means picking one platform and abandoning the others. Etsy's search traffic finds buyers who've never heard of you; Ko-fi's lower fees reward the audience you've already built. The actual problem is visibility once income is split across both: each platform's own dashboard only shows its own slice, in its own format, and neither one will tell you your combined real income for the month, or what to set aside for taxes on all of it together.

Common questions

Because artist income usually comes from several structurally different sources at once: print sales through a marketplace, commissions negotiated directly or through a tipping platform, and sometimes memberships for ongoing supporters. Each of those has its own fee model and its own payout schedule, so there's no single number that represents 'how the business is doing.'

For sales to an audience you already have, usually yes on fees: Ko-fi's shop rate is 5% (or 0% on Gold) plus processing, versus Etsy's roughly 11% organic rate. What Ko-fi doesn't offer is Etsy's search-driven discovery, so the two solve different problems rather than competing directly.

Most artists end up doing this manually in a spreadsheet, which works until volume across platforms makes it tedious to keep current.
