Thinkific's 0% transaction fee is real when you use Thinkific Payments as your processor. Unlike Teachable's Starter plan (7.5% per sale) or Gumroad (10% per sale), Thinkific does not take a cut of each transaction. If you bring your own Stripe account, a surcharge applies that varies by plan tier, but on Thinkific Payments the transaction fee is genuinely zero.
But even on the cleanest setup, Thinkific's monthly plan cost is effectively a transaction fee at low volumes. The Basic plan costs $49/month. If you generate $500/month in course sales, that plan cost alone adds 9.8% to your effective rate. At $1,000/month it is 4.9%. At $5,000/month it drops to under 1%. The plan cost behaves like a regressive fee: it hurts most when you are just starting out and shrinks as you grow.
This is the opposite of platforms like Gumroad or Patreon, where the percentage fee stays constant regardless of volume. On Thinkific, your effective rate improves automatically as revenue grows. On Gumroad, $500/month and $50,000/month both cost the same 10%. That structural difference matters for financial planning, and it is invisible unless you calculate your plan cost as a percentage of revenue.
Thinkific's plan tiers add another dimension. The Free plan has limited features but zero cost. Basic at $49/month adds custom domains, coupons, and email integrations. Start at $74/month adds assignments, certificates, and communities. Grow at $149/month adds multiple admins, bulk enrollments, and API access. Each tier has the same 0% transaction fee, but the monthly cost changes your effective rate differently depending on your revenue.

On a $97 course, that is $2.81 plus $0.30 = $3.11 in processing. Add the amortized plan cost and you have your true cost per enrollment. Owelet calculates this automatically based on your actual monthly volume.
For creators also selling on Teachable, the comparison is useful but not straightforward. Teachable Starter has no monthly cost but charges 7.5% per transaction. Thinkific Basic has a $49/month cost but 0% transaction fee. The crossover depends on your monthly revenue: below $653/month, Teachable Starter costs less in total. Above $653/month, Thinkific Basic costs less. Owelet shows both your Thinkific and Teachable effective rates side by side if you have both connected.
