Gumroad fee calculator

Some calculators quietly bundle Gumroad's processing fee into the 10% platform fee, or skip it entirely. This one keeps them separate — the way Gumroad's own Help Center does — and accounts for the gap between card and PayPal processing too.

Refunds and chargebacks aren't treated the same

If you issue a refund, Gumroad keeps its 10% + $0.50 fee regardless — you lose the sale and the fee.

If a customer files a chargeback with their bank instead, Gumroad returns its platform fee to you — though the card network's own chargeback fee may still hit your account. Most sellers assume both work the same way. They don't.

The facts behind this calculator

A direct sale — your own link, email, or site — costs 10% + $0.50 in platform fee, and this does NOT include card or PayPal processing. Several other calculators bundle these into one number; Gumroad's own Help Center lists them separately.

A Discover sale — surfaced through Gumroad's own marketplace — costs a flat 30%, with processing already included. This one genuinely is all-in.

Card processing runs about 2.9% + $0.30. PayPal processing runs about 3.49% + $0.49 — meaningfully higher on every transaction, and rarely mentioned by other fee calculators.

Since January 1, 2025, Gumroad is a full Merchant of Record: it collects and remits sales tax, VAT, and GST worldwide at no extra charge. This is a tax-compliance role — it has nothing to do with card processing, which is where the 'processing is included' confusion comes from.

If you issue a refund, Gumroad keeps its 10% + $0.50 fee — you lose the sale and the fee. If a customer files a chargeback instead, Gumroad returns its platform fee to you, though the card network's own chargeback fee may still apply.

Common questions

Does Gumroad's 10% + $0.50 fee include payment processing?

No. That figure is the platform fee only. Card processing (about 2.9% + $0.30) or PayPal processing (about 3.49% + $0.49) is charged on top, per Gumroad's own Help Center. The confusion usually comes from Gumroad's Merchant-of-Record status, which covers sales tax and VAT collection — a completely different thing from card processing.

Is Gumroad Discover's 30% fee really all-in?

Yes. Unlike direct sales, a Discover sale's flat 30% already includes payment processing. There's no separate processing charge to add on top of it.

Does Gumroad charge more for PayPal than card payments?

Yes, and it's rarely mentioned elsewhere. Card processing runs about 2.9% + $0.30. PayPal processing runs about 3.49% + $0.49 — a higher percentage and a higher fixed fee, on every single transaction.

Does Gumroad refund its fee if I refund a customer?

No. Gumroad keeps its full 10% + $0.50 platform fee even when you issue a complete refund. You return the sale price out of your own pocket, but the fees Gumroad already collected are gone. Ten $25 refunds a month costs roughly $40 in unrecoverable fees on top of the returned revenue.

What happens to Gumroad's fee if a customer disputes a charge with their bank instead?

This works differently from a voluntary refund. On a chargeback, Gumroad returns its platform fee to you — the asymmetry most sellers don't expect. The card network may still charge its own chargeback fee, which is separate from Gumroad's cut.

Is Gumroad really a Merchant of Record?

Yes, since January 1, 2025. Gumroad calculates, collects, and remits sales tax, VAT, and GST on your behalf worldwide at no extra charge. This means you don't need to register for tax collection yourself in most jurisdictions — but it's a tax-handling feature, separate from the payment processing fee.
