Gumroad vs Etsy Fees: Real Numbers at $10, $25, $50, and $100

By Momo · Founder of Owelet

Quick answer

For an organic sale (no Offsite Ads), Etsy keeps you more than Gumroad's direct rate at every price point from $10 to $100. Etsy's $0.20 listing fee is small enough that its lower 6.5% transaction fee wins out over Gumroad's 10% + $0.50. That flips once Offsite Ads becomes mandatory (over $10,000 in trailing 12-month sales): Etsy's rate jumps to roughly 25-29%, well above Gumroad's 13.7-20.9%.

Etsy has a reputation for stacking fees (a listing fee, a transaction fee, processing, sometimes ads), while Gumroad's pitch is a single flat rate. Run the actual math and the reputation doesn't hold up cleanly: for most sellers, Etsy comes out ahead. The exception is large enough to matter, and it's exactly the point where a lot of sellers hit it without realizing.

The Fee Structures, Side by Side

Gumroad direct sale: 10% platform fee + $0.50 flat, plus separate card processing (2.9% + $0.30). This is the rate for sales through your own link, email list, or site, not Gumroad Discover, which is a flat 30% instead.

Etsy organic sale: $0.20 listing fee (charged per unit sold, not per listing), 6.5% transaction fee, and 3% + $0.25 processing. No ads fee unless Offsite Ads applies.

Etsy with mandatory Offsite Ads: the same stack above, plus 15% on any sale Etsy attributes to its own ad placement. This becomes mandatory (not optional) once a shop crosses $10,000 in trailing 12-month sales.

What You Actually Keep at Four Price Points

PriceGumroad direct keepsEtsy organic keepsEtsy w/ Offsite Ads keeps
$10$7.91 (20.9% fee)$8.60 (14.0% fee)$7.10 (29.0% fee)
$25$20.98 (16.1% fee)$22.18 (11.3% fee)$18.43 (26.3% fee)
$50$42.75 (14.5% fee)$44.80 (10.4% fee)$37.30 (25.4% fee)
$100$86.30 (13.7% fee)$90.05 (9.95% fee)$75.05 (24.95% fee)

Two things stand out. First, Etsy's organic rate beats Gumroad's direct rate at every price point tested, and the gap barely narrows as price goes up: Etsy stays 3-4 percentage points cheaper throughout this range. Second, Offsite Ads doesn't just erase that advantage, it inverts it: Etsy with ads is worse than Gumroad at every one of these prices, sometimes by close to double the fee percentage.

Why Does Etsy's $0.20 Listing Fee Barely Matter?

Because it's a flat 20 cents, not a percentage, so it shrinks in relative weight fast as your price climbs. At $10 it's already only 2% of the sale. At $100 it's 0.2%, effectively noise. Gumroad's $0.50 flat fee follows the same pattern but starts twice as large and stacks on top of a higher percentage rate (10% vs Etsy's 6.5%), which is the actual driver of the gap, not the listing fee itself.

When Does Offsite Ads Change Your Decision?

Right at the point most sellers stop thinking of themselves as small: $10,000 in trailing 12-month sales. Below that, Offsite Ads participation is optional, and you can decline it entirely, keeping your rate at the organic numbers above. Cross it, and Etsy makes the ads fee mandatory on any sale it attributes to its own advertising, not every sale, but enough of them that the effective blended rate for a shop above that line commonly lands well above the pure-organic number, and can approach the "with Offsite Ads" figures shown here depending on how much of your traffic Etsy's ads are actually driving.

If you're approaching that threshold, this is the moment to actually compare platforms rather than assume Etsy stays cheap indefinitely. A shop doing $12,000 a year with a meaningful share of Offsite Ads-attributed sales may already be paying a higher effective rate than Gumroad direct sales would cost for the same revenue.

What Does This Gap Look Like at Real Monthly Volume?

Per-sale percentages are easy to shrug off. Multiplied across a real month of sales, they stop being trivial. At an average $50 sale price:

Monthly revenueSalesGumroad direct feesEtsy organic feesEtsy's advantage
$2,00040$290.00$208.00$82.00/mo
$5,000100$725.00$520.00$205.00/mo
$10,000200$1,450.00$1,040.00$410.00/mo

That's over $2,400 a year at the $5,000/month tier, and nearly $5,000 a year at $10,000/month, assuming the shop stays under the $10,000 trailing-sales threshold that makes Offsite Ads mandatory. The moment a shop crosses that line, the comparison flips in the opposite direction just as sharply, which is exactly why re-checking the math at each new revenue tier matters more than picking a platform once and assuming the answer stays fixed.

Does an International Buyer Base Change the Math?

Potentially, and mostly on Etsy's side of the comparison. Etsy's fee model includes an explicit 2.5% currency conversion fee that applies when a listing's currency differs from the seller's payout currency, on top of the organic rate used throughout this post. Gumroad doesn't have an equivalent modeled international surcharge in its own fee structure the way Etsy does, so the organic-versus-direct comparison above doesn't automatically account for a heavily international buyer base.

A shop doing significant volume with buyers paying in a different currency than the seller's payout currency should re-run the numbers using Etsy's international rate specifically, since the 2.5% addition narrows (though doesn't eliminate, at these price points) Etsy's advantage over Gumroad direct. A seller with a small international share can reasonably ignore this; a seller whose sales are majority international shouldn't assume the organic figures in the table above apply unchanged.

What About Gumroad Discover vs Etsy?

Gumroad Discover (30% flat, processing included) isn't a fair comparison to Etsy organic. It's Gumroad's own higher-fee tier, roughly comparable in size to Etsy with Offsite Ads rather than to Etsy's baseline rate. If a meaningful share of your Gumroad sales come through Discover rather than your own marketing, your real blended Gumroad rate sits somewhere between the direct and Discover numbers, not at the direct rate alone. See what the Gumroad Discover fee actually costs for that math specifically.

Sales Tax Isn't a Deciding Factor Either Way

Both platforms act as merchant of record for sales tax and VAT: Gumroad has collected and remitted it worldwide since January 2025, and Etsy has handled marketplace facilitator tax obligations in most US states and international VAT/GST for years. Neither requires you to register for tax IDs yourself on platform sales, so this isn't a factor that tips the comparison toward either one.

The Real Answer Depends on Your Shop's Size

Below $10,000 in trailing sales, Etsy organic is the cheaper platform for a comparable digital product, by a real and consistent margin. Above that line, once Offsite Ads is mandatory, Gumroad direct sales are very likely cheaper, and the gap can be substantial. Neither platform is categorically better. The crossover point is specific and knowable, and it's exactly where a lot of growing sellers should actually re-run the numbers instead of assuming their original platform choice still holds.

Frequently asked questions

For an organic Etsy sale with no Offsite Ads, Etsy keeps you more than Gumroad's direct rate at every price point from $10 to $100. Etsy's fee stack (listing, transaction, processing) totals less than Gumroad's 10% + $0.50 + card processing at these prices.

Completely. Once Offsite Ads becomes mandatory (any shop over $10,000 in trailing 12-month sales), Etsy adds 15% on any sale it attributes to its own ads. That pushes Etsy's effective rate to roughly 25-29% at these price points, well above Gumroad's direct rate.

$7.25 in total fees on a direct sale ($5.00 platform fee, $0.50 flat fee, $1.45 processing, $0.30 processing flat), leaving you $42.75, an effective rate of 14.5%.

$5.20 in total fees for an organic sale ($0.20 listing, $3.25 transaction fee, $1.75 processing), leaving you $44.80, an effective rate of 10.4%. With mandatory Offsite Ads, that jumps to $12.70 in fees, leaving $37.30 at a 25.4% rate.

Both do, as merchant of record. Gumroad has collected and remitted sales tax and VAT worldwide since January 2025. Etsy has handled marketplace facilitator tax collection in most US states and international VAT/GST for years. Neither requires you to register for tax IDs yourself for platform sales.

If you're a smaller seller not yet subject to mandatory Offsite Ads, Etsy's organic rate is genuinely cheaper. If your shop has crossed $10,000 in trailing sales and Offsite Ads is mandatory, Gumroad direct sales become the cheaper option. The crossover point is exactly where Etsy's ads fee kicks in.

At $2,000/month in $50 sales (40 sales), Gumroad direct costs about $290 in fees versus Etsy organic's roughly $208, a real $82/month gap. At $5,000/month, that gap scales to roughly $205/month in Etsy's favor, assuming no Offsite Ads. The per-sale percentage difference compounds into a meaningful dollar figure once you're looking at a full month rather than one transaction.

It can shift Etsy's numbers specifically. Etsy's model includes an explicit 2.5% currency conversion fee when the listing currency differs from your payout currency, which isn't reflected in the organic numbers in this post. Gumroad doesn't have an equivalent modeled international surcharge in its own fee structure, so a shop with a large international buyer base should re-check Etsy's international rate specifically rather than assuming the organic figures above still apply unchanged.
