What Is the Gumroad Discover Fee and How Much Does It Cost You?

By Momo · Founder of Owelet

Most Gumroad sellers know about the 10% platform fee. Fewer know that a portion of their sales may be subject to a 30% fee instead. That gap matters: if Gumroad's marketplace is driving 30% of your sales, your real effective platform fee rate is not 10%. It is closer to 16%, and that difference at $3,000 per month in revenue is over $2,100 in additional fees per year.

What is Gumroad Discover?

Gumroad Discover is the built-in search and browse feature inside Gumroad's own marketplace. Buyers who visit gumroad.com and search for products, browse categories, or land on Gumroad-curated pages are shopping through Discover. Any purchase they complete through that path triggers the Discover fee rate rather than the standard rate.

Think of it as the difference between a buyer arriving through a link you shared in your newsletter versus a buyer finding you by searching "digital planner" on gumroad.com. The first path is a direct sale. The second is a Discover sale.

How much does the Gumroad Discover fee cost?

The Gumroad Discover fee is 30% of the sale price. The standard Gumroad fee for direct sales is 10%. A Discover sale costs three times as much in platform fees as a direct sale. On a $30 product, a direct sale costs you $3.00 in platform fees. That same $30 product sold through Discover costs $9.00.

Here is how that difference compounds across different monthly revenue levels. The table below shows what you keep at three Discover mix scenarios: all direct sales (10% fee), a mixed scenario with 30% of sales via Discover, and all Discover sales (30% fee).

Monthly RevenueAll Direct (10% fee)30% via DiscoverAll Discover (30% fee)
$500$450 kept ($50 in fees)$420 kept ($80 in fees)$350 kept ($150 in fees)
$1,000$900 kept ($100 in fees)$840 kept ($160 in fees)$700 kept ($300 in fees)
$2,500$2,250 kept ($250 in fees)$2,100 kept ($400 in fees)$1,750 kept ($750 in fees)
$5,000$4,500 kept ($500 in fees)$4,200 kept ($800 in fees)$3,500 kept ($1,500 in fees)

At $5,000 per month with a 30% Discover mix, you pay $300 more in fees than you would if all those same sales had come through direct links. Over twelve months, that is $3,600 in fees attributable entirely to traffic routed through Gumroad's marketplace rather than your own links.

Try it with your own price — the same product costs three times as much in platform fees when it sells through Discover:

Does Gumroad show you your Discover versus direct sales split?

No. When we built Owelet's Gumroad integration, we found that the Discover versus direct split is completely invisible in Gumroad's own dashboard. You can see your total sales volume and your total fees deducted, but Gumroad's own interface does not show what percentage of those sales were charged at the 30% rate versus the 10% rate.

This is not a minor data omission. It means that unless you pull API-level data, you cannot calculate your own real effective fee rate. A creator looking at their Gumroad dashboard might see $3,000 in sales and a $300 deduction and correctly calculate 10%. But if $900 of those sales actually came through Discover, the real fee was $390, not $300, and the effective rate was 13%, not 10%. The dashboard would still show you the $390 deduction but give you no information about what caused it to be higher than expected.

How can you find your Gumroad Discover mix?

Finding your exact Discover mix requires pulling data from Gumroad's transaction API rather than reading the dashboard summary. Each transaction in the API response includes a referrer field indicating whether the sale originated through Discover or through a direct source. This field is where the fee rate distinction lives, and it is not surfaced anywhere in Gumroad's own reporting interface.

If you want to estimate your Discover mix without additional tooling, you can look at your traffic sources in Google Analytics or a similar tool. Traffic arriving through Gumroad's internal marketplace typically appears as traffic from gumroad.com without UTM parameters. Traffic you drove yourself through your own links, if you use UTM tagging consistently, will show up with your tags intact. This method is imprecise, especially if you do not have UTM tagging applied to every link you share, but it gives a rough directional estimate.

What is your real effective Gumroad fee rate?

Your real effective Gumroad fee rate is a blend of the 10% direct rate and the 30% Discover rate, weighted by how your sales are distributed between the two sources. If 80% of your sales come through direct links and 20% through Discover, your blended platform rate is roughly 14%. If half your sales come through Discover, you are paying a 20% blended platform rate, even though Gumroad markets itself as a 10% platform.

Knowing your Discover mix matters most when you are making decisions about promotion strategy. Every sale that arrives through a link you share personally, whether through an email list, a social post, a website, or a direct message, pays the 10% rate. Every sale that arrives because a buyer searched Gumroad and found you pays the 30% rate. That asymmetry makes your owned audience significantly more valuable than Gumroad's organic discovery traffic, purely on a fee-economics basis.

Does opting out of Discover solve the problem?

You can disable Discover listing for individual products in Gumroad's product settings. This ensures those products will not appear in Gumroad's internal search or browse features, which means all sales will come through direct links at the 10% rate. The trade-off is that you lose any organic discovery traffic that Gumroad's marketplace might have sent you.

For most creators who are actively building their own audience and driving their own traffic, opting out of Discover is worth considering if Discover traffic is converting at a worse rate than direct traffic. If Discover is sending you buyers you could not otherwise reach, the economics of keeping it enabled depend on how much incremental revenue that traffic generates versus the premium fee it triggers.

How does Owelet show your Gumroad Discover breakdown?

Owelet connects to Gumroad via read-only OAuth and pulls the referrer data from each transaction in the API response. The financial dashboard that shows your real net income after fees shows your Discover versus direct split as both a percentage of revenue and a dollar amount per month, so you can see exactly what the Discover fee cost you last period and how it has changed over time.

Owelet stores gross_amount, fee_amount, and net_amount per transaction using actual API data, not estimated percentages, so when a Discover sale comes through at 30% the stored fee reflects the actual 30% charged, not an assumed 10%.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Gumroad Discover fee?

The Gumroad Discover fee is 30% of the sale price, applied to any purchase made through Gumroad's built-in search and discovery marketplace. Standard Gumroad sales made through your own direct link cost 10%. Discover sales cost three times as much.

How much does Gumroad Discover charge compared to the standard fee?

Gumroad's standard fee is 10% for direct sales through your own link. The Discover fee is 30% for sales originating through Gumroad's internal marketplace. On a $20 product, a direct sale costs you $2.00 in platform fees. The same sale through Discover costs $6.00.

Does Gumroad tell you how much of your revenue came from Discover?

No. Gumroad's own dashboard does not show your Discover versus direct sales split. You can see your total sales and total fees but not what percentage of those sales were charged at the 30% Discover rate versus the 10% direct rate. You need to pull API data to find this breakdown.

How do I find out what my Gumroad Discover mix is?

Your Discover mix is visible in Gumroad's raw transaction API data, where each sale includes a referrer field indicating its source. Tools that connect to this API can show you the split. You can also estimate it from analytics by looking at traffic without your UTM tags, though this is imprecise.

Can I opt out of Gumroad Discover?

Yes. You can choose not to list your products in Gumroad's Discover marketplace in your product settings. Opting out means you will not appear in Gumroad's internal search results or browse categories, which removes the 30% fee but also removes any organic traffic Discover might send you.

What is my real effective Gumroad fee rate if some sales come from Discover?

Your real effective rate is a blend of 10% and 30%, weighted by your Discover mix. If 20% of your sales come through Discover, your blended rate is roughly 14%. If 50% come through Discover, your blended rate is 20%. The only way to calculate your actual number is to look at each transaction's source.

How do I reduce my Gumroad Discover fee exposure?

Drive traffic to your direct Gumroad product URL rather than to gumroad.com generally. Every sale that arrives through your own link, email list, or social channels pays the 10% rate. Only sales that arrive through Gumroad's internal discovery engine pay the 30% rate.

Does Gumroad still charge payment processing fees on top of the Discover fee?

Yes. Payment processing fees apply on top of both the standard and Discover platform fees. Stripe charges 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction regardless of whether the sale came from Discover or a direct link. These processing fees are separate from the 10% or 30% Gumroad platform fee.
